I had a very surreal experience the other day. At a client's and preparing for a PR meeting, a stranger walked into the room and asked if I was Phil Rennett.
Not knowing whether he was joining the meeting, was about to deliver yet another paternity suit, held a grudge against me since primary school or was delivering news of a massive Lottery win, I hesitated slightly before confirming my identity.
He strode over, shook my hand warmly, introduced himself as Bob and said: "I've just read your book. Loved it. It's given me a completely different outlook on the golf course."
Not only was Bob a golfer, he was a reader - a member of the perfect target audience for my tentative first step into the world of literature, You! A Golf Guru!
We spent ten minutes or so talking about how the book had helped him reduce his handicap this summer, why I'd written it in the first place, courses we had both played and so on. He thoroughly enjoyed the chat and wandered off quite happy.
I had found the experience disturbing, talking to someone about whom I knew next to nothing, but who - thanks to the book - knew quite a lot about me.
I have spent quarter of a century hiding behind a computer, writing vast quantities of copy that was either issued on behalf of a corporate entity or attributed to somebody else. You! A Golf Guru! was the first time I'd put my head above the parapet. It won't be the last.
But I need to get something sorted before the next magnum opus - either get used to the feeling of vulnerability that comes with this microscopic fame, or come up with an appropriate pseudonym.
Suggestions welcome!
You! A Golf Guru! is available in paperback and digital format from a range of online retailers.
